Many people find it easier to exercise during the summer months. Activities can be done both inside and outside, by yourself or with the whole family. Adding movement to your daily routine can help improve energy levels, mood and health status. Start slowly -
Outside Activities to Try:
Get out early before it gets too hot. Spend some time in the morning outside
- light gardening, yard work, or taking a walk. You'll feel the benefits all day long.
- Walk instead of drive to your next activity. Plan 20 extra minutes into your trip to walk to the farmers market, the park or the pool.
- Meet some friends at a park and have a homemade field day: set up mini stations like jump roping, water balloon toss, a three-legged or wheelbarrow race, and a long jump. Be sure to include lots of water breaks!
Inside Activities to Try:
- Lift your old books. Set a timer for 20 minutes and carry your old textbooks or free reading books up the stairs and around the house to gain strength.
- Avoid sedentary time! Set a timer to go off every 1-2 hours that invites you to stand and walk around. Avoiding long periods of sitting can help reduce back pain and can improve focus.
- Create a dance routine. Spend 20-30 minutes creating a dance with the kids. Record the routine so you can practice another time and add more movement into your day.
